 West Texas A&M UNIVERSITY
      
  We are meeting with West Texas A & M University environmental scientists. Dr. Rogers is the leading arsenic contamination scientist in the region, and became our mentor and partner in working to decrease the risk from arsenic in our county.

 GATHERING SOIL
 
Preparing for gathering soil and plants from areas of Cochran County. Dr. Rogers and research assistant Josh Brownlow taught us the importance of protection in the field and the need for clean samples in order to trust our results when arsenic is taken from the samples.

 COLLECTING SAMPLES 
We collected soil samples from the center, quarter, and edge of  different habitats: playa wetlands, irrigated farm land, dryland farms, and rangeland.

 Natural Resource Conservation Service soil specialist Landon Kerby teaches us to use an auger for gathering soil 18 inches deep.

  The soil was gathered and placed in a tub we put the sample in a container for analysis in the laboratory.
